It has a purely somatic motor function, which is innervation of the lateral rectus muscle, an extraocular muscle. The abducens nerve arises from the abducens nucleus in the pons of the brainstem. It exits the brainstem at the junction of the pons and the medulla. It then enters the subarachnoid space and pierces the dura mater to travel in an area known as Dorello’s canal.

Where the pons (a band The abducens nerve leaves the brain stem at the ventral pontomedullary junction; it starts out just as low as the facial nerve but ascends upward across the prepontine cistern to reach the petrous apex. The abducens nerve eventually penetrates the dura at the upper aspect of the petroclival fissure, which also contains the inferior petrosal sinus. The abducens nerve is the sixth cranial nerve (CN VI). It is, along with the oculomotor nerve (CN III) and the trochlear nerve (CN IV), responsible for the extraocular motor functions of the eye. It has a purely somatic motor function, which is innervation of the lateral rectus muscle, an extraocular muscle. The abducens nerve provides innervation to the lateral rectus muscle – one of the extraocular muscles. The lateral rectus originates from the lateral part of the common tendinous ring, and attaches to the anterolateral aspect of the sclera. It acts to abduct the eyeball (i.e.

2020-11-13 · The nerve supply of these muscles is provided by three cranial nerves – namely the oculomotor (CN III), trochlear (CN IV), and abducens (CN VI) nerves. While the oculomotor nerve supplies most of the extraocular muscles, the trochlear and abducens nerves each supply their own muscle.
