David Rothenberg — who touched the hearts of millions after being set aflame by his abusive father in 1983 — has passed away in Las Vegas on July 15 at the age of 42. David was 6 years old when his crazed father soaked his sleeping son with three gallons of kerosene, and then set David afire.
He has taught at CWRU since 2005, serving as Chair of the Department of Music since 2015, and has also taught at Colby College and the University of Chicago. David Rothenberg is Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Music at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, which has encouraged and supported all of his creative projects since 1992. A recent article on Rothenberg’s whale work appeared in the New York Times, along with articles in The Wire and on Living on Earth.
He served in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1977 to 1985 as a member of the Progressive Conservative Party, and was briefly a cabinet minister in the government of Frank Miller Background. Rotenberg David J. Rothenberg is a music historian specializing in the European Middle Ages and Renaissance. He has taught at CWRU since 2005, serving as Chair of the Department of Music since 2015, and has also taught at Colby College and the University of Chicago.
