Paul Romer is upset about the technical rigor of those political assumptions. If the function Lucas and Moll (2014) used allowed you to exchange the order of the limits everything apparently would have been fine! Unfortunately, it turns out that Romer's takedown of Lucas and Moll is the true mathiness.

Abstract Mathiness lets academic politics masquerade as science. Like mathematical theory, mathiness uses a mixture of words and symbols, but instead of making tight links, it leaves ample room for slippage between statements in the languages of words as opposed to symbols, and between statements with theoretical as opposed to empirical content. 3. T/F: Romer thinks that errors in mathematical arguments are examples of mathiness.

Paul Romer writes that like mathematical theory, mathiness uses a mixture of words and symbols, but instead of making tight links, it leaves ample room for slippage between statements in natural versus formal language. The market for mathematical theory can survive a few lemon articles filled with mathiness.

In response, authors will stop doing the hard work that it takes to supply real mathematical theory. If no one is putting in the work to distinguish between mathiness and mathematical theory, why not cut a few corners Romer’s solution to the mathiness problem is merely to re-state the case for the most orthodox positivist philosophy of social science. We never learn whether he thinks that it is a sin to use misleading mathematics to perpetuate a worldview that promotes inequality and entrenches privilege and poverty in equal measure.

Romer mathiness

Paul Romer writes that mathiness is a critique of a style that lets economists draw invalid inferences from the assumptions and structure of a model; a style that authors can use to persuade the reader (and themselves) to adopt conclusions that do not follow by the rules of logic; a style that tolerates wishful thinking instead of precise, clearly articulated reasoning.

From Paul Romer's extended mathiness appendix . I apparently completely misunderstood Paul Romer's comment about "mathiness". My original interpretation was that Romer was upset about obfuscating political assumptions that aren't substantiated empirically by using fancy math. Paul Romer writes that like mathematical theory, mathiness uses a mixture of words and symbols, but instead of making tight links, it leaves ample room for slippage between statements in natural versus formal language.

It is to use better maths.

Mathematics Versus Mathiness. In "Protecting the Norms of Science in Economics", Paul Romer writes: About math: I have studied physics as an undergraduate. I’ve seen clear evidence that math can facilitate scientific progress toward the truth.
